How Words Stick to Our Lives: Blessings or Curses

Have you ever noticed how something you spoke, or your parents spoke, seem to follow you around? Maybe it's that negative phrase your mom used to say, or a negative comment you used to speak over yourself. Well, you're not imagining it: words really do have a way of sticking to our lives in ways we never expected.

This is Part 1 of our 3-part series on “The Power of Words,” inspired by Apostle Michelle Peterson's powerful YouTube teaching on word curses. If you've been feeling like you have a curse on your life, because of words spoken, you're in the right place.

The Science Behind Words that Stick

When you repeatedly hear or say phrases like "I'm so stupid" or "I am cursed," your brain starts treating these statements as facts.

Think about it this way: if someone kept dropping the same color paint on a white canvas every day, eventually that canvas would be completely covered in that color. That's exactly what's happening with the words we speak over our lives repeatedly: they're painting the canvas of our lives, peace, and destiny.

How Word Curses Work in Everyday Life

Apostle Michelle teaches about " word curses": those casual negative statements we make that end up sticking to something in our lives. You might not even realize you're doing it, but listen to yourself for a day. How often do you say things like:

  • "I always get sick during flu season"
  • "I'm terrible with money"
  • "I'm probably going to end up just like my difficult relative"
  • "That drives me crazy"

These aren't just harmless expressions: they're actually creating something in your life. Your words have power, even if you are “just joking” or "being dramatic." Take these words seriously.

Apostle Michelle focuses on the spiritual side of the power of words, but the research backs this up big time. image_2

The Power of Positive Words

But here's the good news: this sticky word principle works both ways! Just like negative words can create curses, positive words can literally create blessings. When you intentionally choose lovely, pure words, you're changing the atmosphere around you.

Apostle Michelle often talks about the blessing effect: how speaking life over yourself, your family, and your circumstances can stick and change it.

Breaking Free from Cursed Words

So how do you unstick the negative words that have been following you around? First, you need to repent and change the words you speak.

Start paying attention to:

  • Your words throughout the day
  • How you describe your things
  • The words you use about your future
  • What you say about your family and things

Once you catch yourself using negative language, don't beat yourself up: just repent. Then ask the Lord to remove the words that stuck to you, others, etc. Then speak something good and holy.

The key is consistency. Remember, it will take time to change the way you have been speaking, so it's going to take time.  Choose Life in your words and reap life in your life.

Words Create Life or Death

Apostle Michelle's teaching on word curses opened my eyes to something profound: we're constantly creating our reality through the words we speak and accept. Every conversation, every internal monologue, every casual comment is either building us up or tearing us down.

The research confirms what the Bible has always taught: there really is life and death in the power of the tongue. When we understand that words literally stick to our lives, we start to realize how important it is to choose them carefully.

This doesn't mean we have to be fake or ignore real problems. It means we can acknowledge difficulties without speaking defeat over our lives. We can face challenges without cursing our future. We can deal with imperfect circumstances without defining ourselves by them.

In Part 2 of this series, we'll dive deeper into breaking specific word curses that might be operating in your life. And in Part 3, we'll explore how to speak blessings that reverse curses and create change.

But for now, just start noticing. Listen to your words. Pay attention to how you describe your life, your relationships, your future. Those words can stick to everything around you, so make sure they're the kind of words you want to live with.

As the Scripture reminds us in Proverbs 18:21: "Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof."
